Description 1796 Pat. British Infantry Officers Sword of the George III/ Napoleonic Period. Overall length approx. 38 in, blade length approx. 32. 3/24 in. The steel blade is straight flat backed with fullers to both sides with a spear point, and double edged for the last 6 inches. To one side of the blade is some decoration towards the rocasso, but much has been lost over time. The blade is to a dark grey patina with darker grey/ black specles of “old” rust throughout. The hilt retains much of its oroiginal gilt and consists of; the articulated shell guard, knuckle bow, cross guard terminating in a rearward foliate decorated quillon, fluted urn pommel with prominent flattened ball tang. The silver wire grip fairly complete and in good overall condition. A good example of a fighting version of this pattern of sword, carried by British infantry officers of the line during the Napoleonic wars, in good overall condition for its age.
