Coin Highlights: First ever 24 karat gold coin series struck by the U.S. Mint Design inspired by the Buffalo Nickel Ed Moy Signature Series Perfect Proof 70 graded by NGC W mintmark Mirror-like finish History of the coin:Since 2006, the U.S. Mint has struck and released this unique gold piece for investors worldwide. The Gold American Buffalo, authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, was the first 24-karat gold coin produced by the U.S. Mint. Additionally, this modern-day precious metal piece harkens to the “golden age” of U.S. coin design by recalling one of the country’s most lauded and widely recognized circulating metal pieces – James Earle Fraser’s Buffalo – or “Indian Head” – nickel, which was struck, with only slight design modifications along the way, from 1913 to 1938. The design features the side profile of a Native American man on the coin’s obverse (front) and an American bison on the reverse. The obverse design is not a portrait of any one particular Native American man, but rather, is reportedly a combination of several real men Fraser encountered throughout his life. The identities of those men are somewhat unclear, as Fraser himself apparently recounted a variety of tales that did not always align regarding which men he used as inspiration for his early 20th century nickel design. Each year, the U.S. Mint produces circulating bullion versions of the coin, plus a limited number of "Proof" coins, known for their mirror-like finish and exceptional quality. A small number of these proof coins achieves a perfect score of Proof 70 from one of the main grading service NGC.
